IELTS是國際認可的高等教育入學所需的英語能力證明。原本是英國當局針對留學生而設的英語能力檢定測驗,自1990年開始改稱為 IELTS (The International English Language Testing System)
IELTS為大多數英國及國外大學所優先認可的英語程度標準,另一方面也可提供同學改善個人整體英語能力的方向。IELTS注重學生在專業範疇內需具備之英語能力,所以許多英語系國家的學校都鼓勵學生參加IELTS測試。尤其為英國,澳洲,紐西蘭,加拿大教育系統所廣泛接受 。

HOW TO conquer the CLoze Test

Filed under: Uncategorized — astorpia @ 9:35 am

One of your lovely classmates asked me a very good and very common question, that is, how to score high in the section of CLoze test. To make it available to everyone interested in the topic, I will post my reply here for every one to have easy access to it.

First of all, to deal with this part, you got to know how the test is designed and what competence is targeted. If you take a close look of all the choice items of the cloze test on previous entrance exams, you will roughly find that the common choice items are as follows:

1. Vocabulary/ idioms

2. Tense/verb form (V-ing or P.P.)

3. conjunctions (and, or, but, so…) & transition words (such as “therefore, instead, however”…)

4. Fixed or Common Usage/Preposition (be addicted to~, be interested in~)

As a result, this is a very complicated and All mixed-up test. There is no easy way to score high; the only thing you can do is expand your vocabulary, get familiar with some major grammatical rules and common usages. The best way to improve the test performance is to practice.

First, get a good test book! what is good depends on what you think. Rule of thumb NO.1: check if the test covers all the different types of choice items (some lazy test makers cover mostly vocabulary). NO. 2 Please check if it provides clear and readable answer key and explanantions.  The most important thing is make sure you can understand why the answer is correct but not the other 3 items. Therefore, make sure the key and explanation is readable and understandable to you.

Last Reminding: 採「先瀏覽後解題」方式,清楚文章大意後,再根據空格前後文語意及文法判斷答案! Help you to score high! Now go to a local bookstore and see if you may come up with a suitable test book on cloze test. If you have any further questions, just drop me a mail!

Wish you a nice vacation,

Joseph

II.                Six-way Paragraphs Unit 81~100 (5 units per week),

III.             Test and Review on 60 Sentence Patterns Exercise Book.

IV.            Two topics of compositions, two simulated tests, and if possible, watching a film and compose a film review  .

Advice for your Entrance Exam Study Plan:

Exams are easy stuff! Don’t be scared by it!

All you need to do is “Find out your sore part (weak part), and fix it!”

That’s all!

Tips:

Try to take some simulated or previous tests of college entrance exams, and find out which section you are not that particularly good at, such as, vocabulary, cloze, filling in blanks, or reading comprehension.

After you have locate your problem, try to look for some materials or test books that help you to tackle with this part. Make sure you know the answer to each question you fail to get it right! This is the most important part! Or you are going to fall on the same spot, again and again.

I will also assign you one reading and writing task!

Just pick up any title (in English, of course) that you are interested in. It could be a novel, travel book, or whatsoever you are fond of reading. All you need to do is to work out a reading journal in 300 words and post it on your blog (the wordpress one) and send a mail to tell me you’ve got it done by 7/30!

If you don’t know what to choose to read, you may go to our library. There you will see a whole large shelf to choose from! Then, you may also visit some bookstore, like the Eslite Flagship Bookstore near MRT Taipei City Hall Station, or Bookman Bookstore (http://www.bookman.com.tw/), there you can also find out lots of treasure to hunt!

Can’t wait to see what treasure you dig up to share with us!!

Enjoy your summer, and Have a nice break!!

Best Wishes,

Joseph
